About Us

Our Mission

We are a team of high school students based in London, UK. After students from a smaller sumo bot club decided to set their sights on larger projects, our team — Griffins 1884 — was formed in 2004, under the leadership of Eric Frederickson and parent mentor Steve Alaniz. Since then, our team has grown to include 51 members and 16 mentors, each contributing their unique skills and passion to drive engineering excellence, teamwork, and community engagement.

With each of our student-run outreach initiatives, we aim to not only advance STEM understanding but create programs that will inspire innovators for years to come — making efforts to teach students and teachers alike. Our program is a hub of innovation and community, hosting regional events, workshops, and open houses. As the first FRC team in the UK, we are a strategic delivery partner for FIRST UK, helping provide life-changing robotics experiences for students across the country, whether through our storefront, microgrants, mentorship, or internships. Ultimately, we seek to uphold and spread the mission of FIRST in the UK and beyond.

“Anyone is welcome. If you don’t know how to use a machine, someone is always willing to help you. It’s a great place to make mistakes and bond.”

“Thanks to the ASL robotics program, I feel like I’ve had experiences that most people who are my age don’t have the chance to have, including organizing teams, designing parts, working within a larger team, thinking about how people work.”
